Question of the
Week
What's A Luau?
The Hawaiians sure
know how to throw a party. Sprays of beautiful
flowers, bands of exotic dancers, and tons of
mouth-watering food make an authentic Hawaiian
luau one of the highlights of any visit to these
gorgeous islands. So throw on a lei (a
traditional garland of flowers, ferns, nuts or
shells), warm up your hula hands, and brush up
on your luau know-how.
A luau is a traditional
Hawaiian celebration with lots of food, flowers,
and Hawaiian or Polynesian entertainment. The
luau usually centers around the kalua pig, which
is placed in an underground oven (called an imu)
with other dishes like lau lau - taro leaves
wrapped around fish and chicken or pork and
cooked in a ti leaf bundle.
Other delicious Hawaiian foods you'll find at a
luau include: poi (made from pounded taro root),
lomi lomi (salted salmon with tomato and onion),
and haupia (coconut pudding). Entertainment such
as hula and fire dancing will keep the energy
flowing before and after you eat. No luau would
be complete without the colorful, fragrant
flowers - mainly orchids and anthuriums - that
have become a symbol of Hawaii. You're sure to
receive a lei as a sign of welcome upon your
arrival at the luau. And if you're looking for a
date, place a flower behind your right ear to
let others know you're available.

Any reason to party is
reason for a luau - graduations, weddings, a
baby's first birthday. The first luau was a
celebration in honor of unity and togetherness.
In ancient Hawaii, men and women were not
allowed to dine together. And women and
commoners were forbidden to eat delicacies such
as banana, coconut and many species of fish. But
when King Kamehameha abolished these ancient
religious practices in 1819 and invited the
local men and women to a feast, the luau was
born.
The luau has changed a little over the years:
luau participants once sat on lauhala mats on
the floor and ate with their fingers. And, while
you may have a fork and knife for a modern luau,
feel free to ditch them and dig in the old
fashioned way. |
